Overheard in a Wisconsin Bakery:
Customer: I’d like a whole pecan pie, please.
Server: I’m sorry but I only have left a layer pie with pecans on top.
Customer: Really? I had my heart set on the pecan.
Server: Let me tell you, this pie has a layer of chocolate fudge in the middle.

thoroughly rooted in Southern culture. Richer than Croesus, it combines corn
syrup, eggs and vanilla in such measure that diners are often compelled to say,
‘A half slice, please.’ The pecan orchards producing the nuts across the
American South, from Georgia to Texas, have a shady bucolic air almost
inviting a checkered tablecloth picnic crowned with the above coup de grace.

That fudge awaits a wager on the middle – of friendship and marriage, of epic saga, of serious endeavor or sojourn on the road. Almost always in that left over pie.
